An electrochemical machining method for removing samples and defective zones in engineering structures has been investigated. It has been shown that samples can be removed in a controllable way and as the surface produced at the removal site is smooth and metallurgically undamaged the workpiece is suitable for subsequent welding repair without further preparation. As the method is forceless it would be simple to automate. © 1987, Institution of Mechanical Engineers. All rights reserved.
