Inherited genetic diseases affect between 2 and 5% of the world's population, often with debilitating or fatal consequences. With the development of powerful new techniques for DNA analysis, researchers have successfully identified the genes responsible for many of these diseases, often knowing little or nothing about the way in which the disease develops. This article describes how the search for genes responsible for inherited diseases is carried out.
