Sandra Mon is a DPhil student researching HIV phylodynamics through the Phylogenetics And Networks for Generalised Epidemics in Africa (PANGEA) Consortium. Her doctoral thesis combines deep sequence phylogenetics with classical epidemiology to investigate HIV transmission and viral evolution between couples and through larger sexual networks in Rakai, Uganda. The overarching goal is to iteratively inform HIV interventions that prioritize virologic suppression for generalized epidemic control, particularly in the era of Undetectable=Untransmittable (U=U).
Sandra’s research interests revolve around infectious disease dynamics, genomic analysis, and health & human rights policy. Prior to her DPhil, she worked at the University of Maryland School of Medicine on malaria molecular epidemiology and vaccine development, then at the Johns Hopkins Center for Public Health and Human Rights on HIV epidemiology for marginalized key populations in Southeast Asia. She has also collaborated with Physicians for Human Rights on epidemiologic assessments of human rights abuses and documentation of attacks on health in conflict. She is currently a Commissioner on the International AIDS Society-Lancet Commission on Health and Human Rights.
A global health professional from Myanmar, Sandra is a staunch advocate of interdisciplinary and intersectional approaches to disease control, and regularly applies the socio-ecological and epistemic injustice frameworks (among other guiding models) to her molecular epi research.
