DPhil Student

Janvi Ahuja is pursuing her DPhil with the Fraser Group, where she focuses on both technical and policy strategies to minimise large-scale pandemic risks. Her doctoral research involves conducting meta-analyses and applying mathematical modelling to improve early warning systems for pandemic prevention using wastewater surveillance. Janvi collaborates with the Nucleic Acid Observatory (NAO) consortium at the MIT Media Lab as part of her work. Through her DPhil, she has also led projects examining the phylodynamics of avian influenza and gathering data on the effectiveness of non-pharmaceutical interventions against COVID-19.

In addition to her academic pursuits, Janvi has contributed to policy development during her DPhil. She has held several positions in this time including being a member of the iGEM Governance and Policy Steering Group, an associate researcher at the Future of Humanity Institute (FHI) in the Faculty of Philosophy, and an awardee of the Emerging Leaders in Biosecurity Fellowship by John’s Hopkins Centre for Health Security. She has also contributed to policy development with the United Nations Biological Weapons Convention and Convergent Research FROs. As a part of her work with FHI, Janvi has dedicated time to issues like AI safety, existential risk, macro strategy, and undertaken a research programme with Epoch AI. 

Outside of her professional interests, she enjoys writing book reviews on Goodreads, powerlifting, and nurturing her collection of house plants, which has transformed my home into an indoor jungle.
